Job Title Digitizing Project Support Student Assistant V

NARRATIVE OF DUTIES:

The Student Assistant V is required to perform highly specialized, technical and complex tasks requiring particular skills and/or knowledge (after receiving a project assignment) with no supervision. The student will normally have completed an undergraduate degree and be in a post-Baccalaureate program with relevance to the project (e.g. Library and Information Studies, Historic Preservation, History, etc.). The Student Assistant V will be assigned work by the IMLS grant Principal Investigator and will also work with the other grant participants: the Pacific Curator, the Hawaiian Curator, and the University Archivist. Assignments involve Hawaiian language newspapers on microfilm, Trust Territory of the Pacific catalog records and digital images, Hawaii War Records finding aids and photographs which support the stated goals of the federally funded project.

DUTIES WILL TYPICALLY INCLUDE ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING

  1. Conversion of existing digital images from one format to others (e.g. TIFF to GIF or JPEG, GIF to PDF).
  2. Verification and quality assurance testing of converted images.
  3. Transfer of existing images from one storage platform to another (e.g. PC workfile to WWW server).
  4. Scanning of printed pages from Hawaiian newspaper microfilm, photographs or other materials such as 35mm negatives.
  5. Capture, creation, editing of cataloging and other textual finding aids.
  6. Design, creation and/or updating of web pages.
  7. Creation or updating of web indexing.
  8. Research and/or documentation related to digitization projects.
  9. OCR conversion of images to text and/or PDF conversion.
  10. Install, test, evaluate, and use graphics and digitization software programs and scanning equipment.
  11. Write, update, and maintain procedures and operations documentation (either online or in hardcopy) for digital image projects.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Work will take place in Hamilton library and will be performed on PCs located either in the Systems Office or in Special Collections. Work should be scheduled in minimum 2 hour segments. Schedule may include early or late hours or weekends once student is familiar with project assignments.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Complete a minimum of one semester of graduate level work in the U.H. Library and Information Studies Program or other relevant graduate program.
  2. Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  3. Ability to set priorities, interpret documentation manuals, prepare procedures and documentation.
  4. Familiarity with Windows personal computer functions and basic software.
  5. Familiarity with WWW, HTML encoding.
  6. Ability and desire to do work that requires attention to detail and pattern recognition skills.
  7. An aptitude for learning new technologies.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Knowledge and experience with scanning hardware and software and experience with graphics programs.
  2. Hawaiian language reading ability.
  3. Two years experience working with microcomputers or in web page design and construction.

Job Title UNIX Image Server System Admin. Support Student Assistant V

NARRATIVE OF DUTIES:

The Student Assistant V is required to perform highly specialized, technical and complex tasks requiring particular skills and/or knowledge (after receiving a project assignment) with no supervision. The student will normally have completed an undergraduate degree and be in a post-Baccalaureate program with relevance to the project (e.g. Library and Information Studies, Computer Science, Electronic Engineering). The Student Assistant V will be assigned work by the IMLS grant Principal Investigator and will also work with the other grant participants: the Pacific Curator, the Hawaiian Curator, and the University Archivist. Assignments will involve support of the Unix Enterprise250 server hardware and software which provides access to digital files created from Hawaiian language newspapers on microfilm, Trust Territory of the Pacific catalog records and photographs, Hawaii War Records finding aids and photographs.

DUTIES WILL TYPICALLY INCLUDE ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING

  1. Assisting or performing all tasks related to installation, configuration, maintenance and support of a Unix server running the Solaris operating system.
  2. Assisting or performing installation, configuration, maintenance and support of web server software (initially to be Sun "Easy Access Server" software; later may be Apache server software).
  3. Transfer of existing images from one storage platform to another (e.g. PC workfile to WWW server).
  4. Design, creation and/or updating of web pages.
  5. Creation or updating of web indexing; configuration and maintenance of web search engine (initially will be "Swish-E").
  6. Any and all tasks generally included in the responsibilities of "web master".
  7. Research and/or documentation related to digitization projects.
  8. Design, creation and/or updating of web forms, java scripts, etc.
  9. Capture, manipulation and analysis of web site survey forms, comments.
  10. Write, update, and maintain procedures and operations documentation (either online or in hardcopy) for server administration.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Work will take place primarily in Hamilton library and will be performed on the web server located in the Systems Office computer room, PCs located either in the Systems Office or in Special Collections. Work should be scheduled in minimum 2 hour segments. Schedule may include early or late hours or weekends once student is familiar with the project and server support assignments. Some work may be performed remotely from off-site, and/or on an on-call basis once student is well versed in the support role.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Completion of a minimum of one semester of graduate level work in the U.H. Library and Information Studies Program, Computer Science or other relevant graduate program.
  2. Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  3. Ability to set priorities, interpret manuals, prepare procedures and documentation.
  4. Familiarity with Windows personal computer functions and basic software.
  5. Familiarity with Unix system level tasks, WWW, HTML encoding.
  6. Ability and desire to be a "web master".
  7. An aptitude for learning new technologies.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Knowledge and experience with Unix system administration, SolarisOperating System and web server software administration.
  2. Two years experience working in web page design and construction.
  3. Experience with internet protocol and networking hardware and software
