Semi-Annual Status/Activity Report III

In October 1998, the project participants were invited to participate in an invitational conference co-sponsored by IMLS, in coordination with the University of Missouri-Columbia, entitled &quot;Web-Wise: A Conference on Libraries and Museums in the Digital World&quot;. The conference was attended by nearly 200 developers of digital libraries, library and museum professionals, and policy makers.

In October 1998, the project participants were invited to participate in an invitational conference co-sponsored by IMLS, in coordination with the University of Missouri-Columbia, entitled &quot;Web-Wise: A Conference on Libraries and Museums in the Digital World&quot;. The conference was attended by nearly 200 developers of digital libraries, library and museum professionals, and policy makers.

An expanded article was produced from the presentation and published by the online journal FIRST MONDAY. FIRST MONDAY is one of the first peer-reviewed journals on the Internet, about the Internet.

We have processed and mounted web usage statistics spanning from September 1999 through July 2000.


Highlights of Activities: October 1999 - March 2000

October 1999
The United States of America Internet Public Library notified us that they were &quot;currently adding several new sections to our website. Your site, the Hawai'i Newspaper section, will be one of our featured sites. Congratulations again on succeeding to create such a wonderful resource for our state.&quot;

OCLC CORC metadata cataloging template/workform created for input of HWRD records.

November 1999
Project participant Martha Chantiny attended Internet Library conference and workshops (pre-conference workshop &quot;Using Metadata for Knowledge Management&quot; taught by OCLC, post-conference workshop &quot;Design and Development of Intranet Solutions&quot;)

Began planning to use additional award of $10,000 to produce a digital project sharing/learning workshop for Pacific island/Hawai'i/Guam and fund travel and events to be held at the Pacific Islands Association of Libraries and Archives (PIALA) next meeting on Guam in November 2000 (see their February newsletter)

Presentation has been scheduled on the PIALA program as: Pre-Conference Workshop 2, Sharing History: Digitizing a Micronesian Photograph Collection University of Guam, RFK Library, Monday-Tuesday, November 6-7, 2000. 8-10 participants from the islands of Majuro, Yap, Koror, Phonpei, Saipan (and perhaps Chuuk and Kosrae) are being identified and invited as of August 2000.

November 1999 - March 2000
Planning and preparation for IMLS Web-wise conference.

December 1999
University of Hawai'i at Manoa formally joins the OCLC CORC research project in order to continue input of metadata for HWRD records (begun in OCLC Institute in September 1999) Dublin Core metadata records created in training Institute were later transferred to &quot;live&quot; OCLC online catalog in June 2000.

Freeware TIFF Viewer for TTPI photographs and instructions for downloading made available on web page ../../digicoll/ttp/ttpi_tiff.html.

January 2000
HWRD portion of Project site was featured in the online demonstration project &quot;Local Sightings/Citings: teaching and learning through local history & culture&quot; produced under the auspices of the Center for Teaching Excellence at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.

January-March 2000
Student &quot;labor&quot; reduced to only 2 assistants, no additional unpaid Library Information Studies (LIS) interns recruited for spring semester due to family medical emergency and other schedulihn conflicts for project manager/investigators.

March 2000
Graduate student who was performing System Administration duties resigned to take a job with IBM.
