Background Information on the Scanning of Selected StoriesIn 1997-99, the Library originally planned to use funds in SEED-grant project to scan a significant number of stories already selected by a Hawaiian language faculty member and used in the form of photocopies in classes. When scanning began it was quickly discovered that locating and scanning individual stories within microfilmed newspaper articles consumed very large amounts of time and was difficult to do accurately. As a result, the decision was made to concentrate on scanning entire runs of newspapers on microfilm and only one story was scanned from microfilm. At the end of the project, new, clear printouts on 8.5x11 paper of a large number of stories, with all pages at a consistent magnification, were made from several newspapers. These included Ka Nupepa Kuokoa, Ke Au Hou and others. All of the printouts, unfortunately, have not yet been scanned and processed.
