Gary L. Fitzpatrick is the Cartographic Specialist for Digital Programs in the Geography and Map Division at the Library of Congress, where has worked for 32 years. He was the principal contributor to the Division's bibliography, Fire Insurance in the Library of Congress, has been the curator of numerous exhibits for the Library, and is the author of the The Early Mapping of Hawaii and coauthor of Surveying the Mahele: Mapping Hawaii's Land Revolution. The Geography and Map Division has three major initiatives in the area of digital geography: scanning of historical maps and delivery on the Library's web page; collecting of digital geography files and software; and staffing up for delivery of GIS services to Congress. Information on these three major activities and other minor initiatives will be described.
Dr. Greenberg retired from the U.S. Geological Survey, National Mapping Division, after over 20 years of Federal Service. He specialized in developing computerized meta-data bases such as the Aerial Photography Summary Record System of the USGS Earth Science Information Center. Other past employment was as an associate professor and chairman of the Geography Department at California State University Sacramento, as a cartographer in automated map production at the System Development Corporation in Santa Monica, California, and technical work in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Since retirement he has been doing voluntary work in current and historical map and aerial photo archiving at the USGS Library in Menlo Park, California. He has written technical manuals on map production and articles on geography, historical maps, map design, quality control and cartobibliography. Unclassified works have appeared in California 49 (California Map Society with Book Club of California, 1999), the New Book of Knowledge (Grolier, 1998 ed.), the Information Bulletin (WAML, 1982), and the International Yearbook of Cartography (ICA, 1970, '71, '74). Dr. Greenberg has served as past president of the California Map Society and he is a member of WAML and other professional organizations.
Karl Kim is the Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. At UHM, he has directed the Resource Management Certificate program and has overseen the implementation of an advanced geographic information systems laboratory and training facility. Karl is a nationally recognized expert in transportation and traffic safety and serves on the editorial board of Accident Analysis and Prevention. He has been appointed or elected to several national committees and boards in this field. He holds an A.B. in demography from Brown University and a Ph.D. in urban studies and planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Mary Lynette Larsgaard is Assistant Head of the Map and Imagery Laboratory, Davidson Library, University of California at Santa Barbara. The Map and Imagery Lab at UCSB has a collection of remote-sensing imagery and maps of approximately 4.5 million items, and is the largest of its kind in any university library in North America. Mary has published extensively in the field of spatial data in the libraries, most notably with a widely used text, Map Librarianship: an Introduction (now in a third edition, published in 1998 by Libraries Unlimited). Her specialties within that broad area are cataloging/metadata creation, and twentieth-century and more recent topographic and geologic maps. She is internationally recognized as an authority in this area of librarianship. Mary received a B.A. in geology from Macalester College, an M.A. in library science from the University of Minnesota, and an M.A. in geography from the University of Oregon. Before coming to UCSB in 1988, she was the map librarian and later Assistant Director for Special Collections at the Arthur Lakes Library, Colorado School of Mines.
Matt McGranaghan is an Associate Professor in UH Manoa's Geography Department where he teaches Computer Cartography Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing, and The Geography of Honolulu. He holds a Ph.D from SUNY-Buffalo, and M.A. and B.A. from SUNY-Albany.
Craig began his career as a staff planner in the Long Range Planning Branch of the former Department of Planning and Economic Development. He became the State GIS program manger when the State GIS program was initiated within the Office of the Governor in 1988. He continued in this capacity when the Office of State Planning was transferred to the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism and renamed Office of Planning. Craig holds a B.A. and M.A. in geography with a certificate in urban and regional planning from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Linda Zellmer is Head of the Geology Library at Indiana University. She has a BA degree with a dual major in geology and biology from the University of
Wisconsin-Oshkosh, an MA degree in Marine Science from The College of William and Mary and a Masters in Library and Information Science from the
University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Prior to her present position at Indiana University, she has held library positions at Oklahoma State University, the University of
Wyoming, Arizona State University.
Linda is active in several national and regional professional library associations including the Western Association of Map Libraries, American Library
Association, Special Library Association, and Geoscience Information Society. She is currently edits the Western Association of Map Libraries Information
Bulletin and serves as WAML Webmistress. Ten years ago, she had to make a difficult choice: she could either take a formal class on Geographic Information
Systems at the University of Wyoming or attend the WAML meeting in Hawaii. She chose to take the GIS class. As a result, Linda has experience with
Geographic Information Systems and spatial data, and has a strong interest in the archiving of spatial data.
