Ellen Chapman graduated from Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii, earned a BA degree at the University of New Mexico, and was a Peace Corps volunteer for two years with a public health program in Brazil. She earned a master's degree in Library Science at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, then worked as a reference and bibliography librarian at the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development in Washington, D.C., for almost two years. For the next 27 years she was a social sciences and humanities librarian at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Library. While there she earned another master's degree in American Studies. During the course of her professional career Chapman was a USIA Library Fellow as library consultant for a year in India and the Philippines, and taught library science and English for a year at Beijing Foreign Studies University in China. In 1997 she retired from her reference job, began archival training, and was appointed processing archivist for the Hawaii Congressional Papers Collection. She completed the Spark M. Matsunaga Papers in January 2005, the Thomas P. Gill Papers in March 2006, and the Ed Case Papers in December 2007. Chapman is a member of the Association of Hawaii Archivists, the Society of American Archivists, and the Academy of Certified Archivists.
