Introduction |
In 1914, the first thesis was written and accepted at the University of Hawai'i in partial fulfillment for an advanced degree (Master of Science). Nine years later in 1923, Robert Aitken completed the first University of Hawai'i thesis pertaining to the Pacific Islands. His was also the first Master of Arts thesis accepted at the University of Hawai'i. To date more than 450 doctoral dissertations and master's theses have been completed that contain research relating to the Pacific Islands region. The following list is a bibliography of all of those works.
|
Scope |
All dissertations and theses completed at the University of Hawai'i through December 2000 were examined. Only works pertaining to the Pacific Islands were selected for this list. Excluded were works on Hawai'i. However, if a work covered Hawai'i and other Pacific regions, it was included.
<>The Special Collections staff of the University of Hawai'i Library compiles an annual list of all University of Hawai'i dissertations and theses. Arrangement |
The main list is arranged geographically. In cases where a work covers substantially more than one area, the citation has been repeated under each area. For example, a work on Samoa, Vanuatu, and Fiji has been listed under each of these geographic designations. Indexes by author and title provide access to specific works. In addition, a Field of Study index provides a limited type of subject access. Using the "find" feature of your web browser also provides a type of keyword access.
