Anatomy and Reproductive Biology
LIBRARY COLLECTION POLICY STATEMENTS
I. PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Department of Anatomy and Reproductive Biology offers undergraduate courses in anatomy as a service to the University at large to support several paramedical disciplines, plays a formal role in graduate instruction for students in the M.D. program, and provides graduate programs leading to the MS or PhD degrees in anatomy and reproductive biology. The MS and PhD degree title is Biomedical Sciences (Anatomy and Reproductive Biology). Several of the undergraduate courses taught in the department are cross-listed with the physiology and biochemistry departments. There is no undergraduate degree offered in either anatomy or reproductive biology. Program emphasis is on the PhD, rather than on the MS. A concurrent degree program for students enrolled as MD candidates can also be arranged. The concentration of the department is in the areas of female reproductive biology, gamete maturation and fertilization, endocrinology, and neuroscience. The department also includes several faculty members of the Department of Animal Sciences and specialize in the area of reproductive physiology of mammals.
Areas of active faculty and graduate student research include the following: embryo-uterine interactions, human sexuality, biochemistry and physiology of relaxins, reproductive physiology, fertilization and fertility control, developmental neurobiology, egg-sperm interaction and in vitro fertilization, cell biology of implantation, and endocrinology
Because of the diverse interests of the faculty, many play a prominent role in a number of academic programs outside the department, including the Cellular, Molecular, and Neurosciences Program, the Pacific Biomedical Research Center, the Departments of Animal Sciences, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Biochemistry, Genetics, and Physiology.
II. COORDINATION OF COLLECTING RESPONSIBILITIES
The collections at several of the hospital libraries act as supplementary resources for faculty and students in the field of anatomy and reproductive biology. Many of the more clinically oriented journals, which are not held by Hamilton Library, are disbursed among these libraries. Publications of the National Institutes of Health and other medically related government publications are available through Hamilton Library's Government Documents Collection.
III. GUIDELINES TO MATERIALS COLLECTED OR EXCLUDED
Language: English language material predominates. However, Japanese and European language materials are occasionally purchased if titles are requested by the department.
Chronological: Acquisition emphasis is almost exclusively on current (past five years) research publications. The knowledge base upon which the field of reproductive biology is founded changes relatively rapidly and, therefore, current information is most desirable.
Geographic: Not relevant.
Date of Publication: Current.
Types/Formats of Materials Collected: Monographs on current research in the field, Conference Proceedings, Handbooks, Dictionaries; Indexes, Abstracts, and Bibliographies (paper/electronic); Periodicals (electronic access, if available), Government Documents, Textbooks. Excluded are manuscripts, reprints of articles from serials, house organs and newsletters, and dissertations.
Treatment: Bibliographical, reference, statistical and mathematical material, legal, ethical and medical aspects, and reports on scientific experimental results.
