Medical TechnologyLIBRARY COLLECTION POLICY STATEMENTS
As an instructional unit of the School of Medicine, the Division of Medical Technology offers a BS degree in Medical Technology that includes a period of clinical training leading to certification as a certified medical technologist. This clinical training program is available in AMA approved hospitals on Oahu, Hawaii, and Kauai. Instructional and research interests include: general and applied microbiology; microbial ecology, physiology and genetics; host-parasite microbiology and pathogenesis; immunology; animal virology; environmental virology and microbiology; cell biology; immunohematology; clinical chemistry; hematology; administrative and fiscal aspects of laboratory management; maintenance and application of medical instrumentation; and clinical diagnostic procedures, especially as they relate to tropical medicine.
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the field the students draw heavily from many areas of the medical collection. The collections at several of the affiliated hospital libraries act as supplementary resources for faculty and students in the field of medical technology.
Language: English language materials predominates Chronological: No limitations, but the emphasis is on current clinical theories and research. Geographic: Literature is primarily from the United States or Europe. The collection of materials from other areas is generally limited to regional studies. Date of Publication: Current materials are emphasized; gaps are filled as needed; rare and historical materials may be acquired as gifts. Types/Formats of Materials Collected: Monographs on current research in the field; upper level texts; government publications; conference proceedings; indexes, abstracts, and bibliographies (paper/electronic); handbooks and dictionaries; and serials (electronic access, if available). Excluded are manuscripts, reprints of articles within serials, house organs, and private and company files. Treatment: Historical; primary sources and documents; applications, practices and methods; computer related; biographical; reference and bibliographical; statistical and mathematical; textbooks; professional and applied training; and reports on scientific experimental results.
