LIBRARY COLLECTION POLICY STATEMENTS
I. PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Biology Program is a cooperative program utilizing faculty from the Departments of Botany, Microbiology, Zoology, Genetics & Molecular Biology, Plant Molecular Physiology, Environmental Biochemistry, and Women's Studies. It provides an academic home to students who wish to pursue a broad training in the biological sciences.
The Biology Program offers two degree programs. The Bachelor of Science degree program is designed for students planning to go to graduate schools or to become teachers. The Bachelor of Arts degree program is designed for students planning to enter the health related professional schools.
Student interests include animal behavior; comparative physiology and endocrinology; developmental biology; evolutionary biology; neurobiology; population and community ecology, genetics and related health sciences.
II. COORDINATION OF COLLECTING RESPONSIBILITIES
The Biology cooperative program draws heavily from many disciplines in the natural and health sciences. The bibliographic needs of undergraduate students not already met by the collections in other science disciplines are taken into consideration when selecting for this collection. The reference staff, in coordination with teaching faculty selects reference materials, media and electronic resources. The Sinclair A-V collection and Reserve Book Room are used by this program. Occasionally the Bishop Museum Library may serve as a source of material for faculty and students.
III. GUIDELINES TO MATERIALS COLLECTED OR EXCLUDED
Language: English is preferred. The collection contains some material in Western European and Slavic languages. Asian language material is housed in both the Science and Technology area and the Asia Collection.
Chronological: No limitations, but the emphasis is on current theories and research.
Geographic: Interests of the department are global however, material specific to the Pacific Basin and tropical regions are sought out. The collection of materials from other areas is generally limited to regional studies.
Date of Publication: Current materials are emphasized; gaps are filled as needed; limited rare and historical materials may be acquired as gifts.
Types/Formats of Materials Collected: Monographs on current theories and research in the field, upper and lower level texts; government publications; conference proceedings; selected United States and foreign dissertations; print and electronic forms of indexes, abstracts, bibliographies; handbooks, dictionaries; and serials. Excluded are manuscripts, reprints of articles within serials, house organs, and private and company files.
Treatment: Historical; primary sources and documents; applications, practices, and methods; computer-related; equipment used in; biographical; reference and bibliographical; statistical and mathematical; textbooks; professional and applied training; and reports on scientific experimental results.
