LIBRARY COLLECTION POLICY STATEMENTS
I. PROGRAM INFORMATION
As an instructional unit of the College of Natural Sciences, the Chemistry Department provides degree programs, and basic chemistry courses for undergraduate liberal arts students. As the Chemistry Department is the only academic research unit in the state, their mission is to be the source of sophisticated chemical knowledge for Hawaii. The department carries out this mission by providing instruction to those students wanting to become chemists at the various degree levels offered by the department; by teaching students at all levels, but especially at the graduate level, how to carry out original research in chemistry; by developing research programs which add to mankind's knowledge of the world; and by providing expertise in the chemistry unique to Hawaii and bringing that chemistry to the attention of the world. The department offers the BA, BS, MS (Plan A, thesis), and PhD degrees.
Faculty and graduate student research interests include analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. More specialized research programs involve marine natural products, materials and surface studies, electron spectroscopy, ultraviolet radiation physics, the structure of molecules, and geochemistry.
II. COORDINATION OF COLLECTING RESPONSIBILITIES
Chemistry is a strongly interdisciplinary subject. Closely related disciplines include biochemistry, geochemistry, and physical oceanography. All the departments in the colleges of Natural Sciences, Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, and Engineering, and the schools of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, and Ocean and Earth Sciences and Technology use the collection to support their classes and research.
The chemical sciences depend heavily on literature published by governmental agencies. The Government Documents Collection is the depository for U.S National Bureau of Standards publications, as well as NTIS documents and other state and foreign government publications. The Hawaiian Collection houses all the publications of relevant Hawaii State agencies.
III. GUIDELINES TO MATERIALS COLLECTED OR EXCLUDED
Language: English is preferred. The collection contains some material in Western European and Slavic languages. Asian language material is housed in both the Science and Technology area and the Asia Collection.
Chronological: No limitations, but the emphasis is on current theories and research.
Geographic: No Limitations.
Date of Publication: No limitations, but current material is most important. Gaps are filled as needed; rare and historical material may be acquired as gifts.
Types/Formats of Materials Collected: Monographs and serials (electronic access, if available) on current research in the field; upper level texts; government publications; conference proceedings; selected United States and foreign dissertations; indexes, abstracts and bibliographies (paper/electronic); handbooks and dictionaries. Excluded are manuscripts, reprints of articles within serials, house organs, and private and company files.
Treatment: Historical; primary sources and documents; applications, practice and methods; computer-related; equipment used in; biographical; reference and bibliographical; statistical and mathematical; selected textbooks; professional and applied training; and reports on scientific experimental results.
