LIBRARY COLLECTION POLICY STATEMENTS

I. PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Department of Mathematics offers the BA, BS, MA, and PhD degrees.

Undergraduate instruction is offered for students in engineering, the natural sciences, and mathematics. Probability, statistics, and discrete mathematical courses are available for the above and for social science students. A survey course is taught for those seeking degrees in one of the humanities. The department has assumed responsibility for applied mathematics and a special course for architecture majors.

The graduate program offers courses in lattice theory, functional analysis, logic, ring theory, complex functions theory, partial differential equations, topology, algebraic geometry, universal algebras and function algebras, probability, combinatorics, number theory, harmonic analysis, differential geometry, operator theory, and applied mathematics. Research efforts parallel instruction in these areas.

II. COORDINATION OF COLLECTING RESPONSIBILITIES

The Mathematics selector is responsible for most materials acquired in support of Mathematics departments programs. Selection is assisted by the individual members of the Mathematics department using such source material as approval plan forms and catalogs and advertisements.

Acquisitions for mathematics courses applicable to the computer sciences and to artificial intelligence are made by selectors for information science and engineering.

Acquisitions appropriate for non-science disciplines (e.g. architecture, business, economics, etc.) are routed to the discipline selectors. Works on the teaching of mathematics are the joint responsibility of the education selector and the mathematics selector. Audiovisual materials are acquired by the Wong AV Center.

III. GUIDELINES TO MATERIALS COLLECTED OR EXCLUDED

Language: English is preferred. English translations of major foreign language journals are acquired. Foreign language publications are purchased only selectively.

Chronological: No limitations; in general only currently published materials are acquired, except for the history of science.

Geographic: No Limitations.

Date of Publication: No limitations; research publications in mathematics do not become obsolete.

Types/Formats of Materials Collected: Research monographs and graduate level textbooks; mathematical and statistical tables; technical glossaries and bilingual dictionaries, selectively, biographies and institutional directories, selectively; reports and lecture notes and course materials are all collected. Excluded are most textbooks, preprints and reprints. Also acquired are professional journals, conference proceedings, series, and indexes and abstracts, including both paper and electronic versions with Web access preferred.

IV. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

By virtue of the Mathematics Department's subscription to the Pacific Journal of Mathematics, a number of European and Asian journals are received on exchange.
