Microbiology

LIBRARY COLLECTION POLICY STATEMENTS


I. PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Department of Microbiology instructional and research programs emphasize the following areas: general and applied microbiology; microbial ecology; microbial physiology, microbial genetics; host-parasite microbiology and pathogenesis; immunology; animal virology; environmental virology and microbiology; ultrastructure and cell biology; microbial nitrogen fixation; medical microbiology and infectious diseases; regulatory mechanisms and genetics of eukaryotic microorganisms; and marine microbiology. The department offer the BA, BS, MS, and PhD degrees.


II. COORDINATION OF COLLECTING RESPONSIBILITIES

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of microbiology, students and faculty make use of several other areas of the collection. Extensive use is made of the medical, biochemical, and aquatic science literature. Coordination is necessary with the selectors in medical technology, agronomy and soil science, agricultural biochemistry, animal sciences, oceanography, and medicine.

III. GUIDELINES TO MATERIALS COLLECTED OR EXCLUDED

Language: English is preferred. The collection contains some material in Western European and Slavic languages. Asian language material is housed in both the Science and Technology area and the Asia Collection.

Chronological: No limitations, but the emphasis is on current theories and research.

Geographic: No Limitations.

Date of Publication: Current material is most important. Gaps are filled as needed; rare and historical materials may be acquired as gifts.

Type/Format of Materials Collected: Monographs on current research in the field; upper level texts; government publications; conference proceedings; selected United States and foreign dissertations; print and electronic forms of indexes, abstracts, and bibliographies; and handbooks and dictionaries. Excluded are manuscripts, reprints of articles within serials, house organs, and private and company files.

Treatment: Historical; primary sources and documents; applications, methods and practices; computer-related; equipment used in research; biographical; reference and bibliographical; statistical and mathematical; textbooks; professional and applied training; reports on scientific experimental results.
