LIBRARY COLLECTION POLICY STATEMENTS
I. PROGRAM INFORMATION
The School of Nursing offers the BS, MS and PhD degrees in nursing. In addition, the school has developed outreach programs on Oahu and the neighbor islands for an RN-to-BS pathway, which allows entry after the completion of an Associate degree or diploma program in nursing. The total number of outreach students at any time is approximately 35. (See also the separate statement for the Dental Hygiene program within the School of Nursing.)
The school's instruction program ranges from basic nursing concepts, theory, research, and administration to such areas of specialization as gerontology, community health, and adult nursing. Throughout the curriculum emphasis is placed not only on nursing skills and knowledge, but also on nursing in a social context and the psychological aspects of nursing care. A great deal of emphasis in placed on the cultural and ethnic aspects of nursing in a multicultural community.
Current faculty teaching and research interests fall into the following areas: Clinical nursing including adult health (oncological, gerontological, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal); parent-child nursing (obstetrical, gynecological, pediatric); nursing administration; mental health nursing; cross-cultural aspects of health care, health beliefs, and ethnic health practices; nursing process and diagnosis, and nursing theory and research; health care delivery including communication, leadership, advocacy, health risk assessment and promotion, home and primary care, care and crisis management, chronicity, and emergency care and rehabilitation; human development over the life span including life processes and family dynamics; modalities of care (interventions) such as touch and imagery therapy, advocacy, motivation, caring, and empathy.
II. COORDINATION OF COLLECTING RESPONSIBILITIES
In addition to nursing materials, the discipline makes use of materials in the biomedical sciences and social sciences, selected by the discipline specialists. Publications of the National Institute of Health and other appropriately related government publications are in the Government Documents collection.
The collections at several of the affiliated hospitals act as resources for faculty and students in the School of Nursing.
III. GUIDELINES TO MATERIALS COLLECTED OR EXCLUDED
Language: Almost exclusively English; the current flow of information is primarily from the United States to other countries.
Chronological: No limitations, but the emphasis is on current materials.
Geographic: United States almost exclusively.
Date of Publication: Current materials are emphasized.
Textbooks: Textbooks make up a large part of the nursing publishing output and are collected extensively.
Types/Formats of Materials Collected: Textbooks, periodicals (electronic access, if available), conference publications, and selected newsletters; major indexing and abstracting services with online access; publications of the major organizations; handbooks, dictionaries, encyclopedias and directories; atlases; microforms as needed. Excluded are non-UH theses and dissertations, preprints of conference papers, and manuscript materials.
Treatment: Reference, bibliographic, biographical, literary reviews; historical and new research reports; applications; computer-related; social, cultural, and educational aspects; theoretical; and administration and management.
IV. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
When funds permit, the library systematically collects the titles on the Brandon-Hill biennial list for nursing, and those listed by the American Journal of Nursing as best books of the year.
