LIBRARY COLLECTION POLICY STATEMENTS
I. PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Department of Economics grants the BA, MA and PhD degrees. It also offers a joint economics - business program leading to a PhD in economics. This program is limited to students with or completing an MBA. Fields offered by the department include: economic development, international economics, health and population economics, labor economics, public economics, macroeconomic policy and modeling, and resource and environmental economics. The department also has courses that are cross-listed with the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. Faculty research interests with regional emphasis on Asia and the Pacific make graduate field specialization in this area very attractive to students. The Economics Department has exchange programs with the Research Institute of Economics and Business Administration of Kobe University, Japan and Thammasat University in Bangkok Thailand.
II. COORDINATION OF COLLECTING RESPONSIBILITIES
The department's interests in Asia and the Pacific Basin result in active use of the Asia, Pacific, Hawaiian, and the Government Documents collections of Hamilton Library. The department works with the various country centers located in the School of Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific Studies (SHAPS) In addition, the Economics Department maintains strong links with the East-West Center, especially with its programs on environment, population, international economics and politics and resources: energy and minerals. Some of the center's professional staff hold joint appointments and affiliate faculty positions in the department. The Research Information Services collection of the East-West Center emphasizes non-trade publications, conference papers, and to some extent official publications and publications of non-governmental organizations located in the Pacific Rim countries. The collection relies also on U.S. government and international documents, as well as the publications and data sets of various national and international groups (National Bureau of Economic Research, World Bank, OECD, ASEAN).
III. GUIDELINES TO MATERIAL COLLECTED OR EXCLUDED
Language: English is the primary language. The Asia Collection selects Asian language materials.
Chronological: The primary emphasis is on current developments, policies and data; backfiles are retained where historical data is used in research or course-work. For the earlier time periods, works are acquired selectively to serve the needs of other departments, for example, history or faculty requests.
Geographic: While the department's research focus is on economic development in Hawaii, Asia and the Pacific all aspects of economic activity and policy in the United States are collected. The effect on Pacific Rim countries on economic developments elsewhere in the world broadens the scope of the collection. Other geographic areas are included selectively.
Date of Publication: Current publications are emphasized for all fields and retrospective titles are selectively collected in specialized areas such as economic history. Empirical research often requires data covering a multi-decade time span.
Types/Formats of Materials Collected: All formats, electronic (online, CD-ROM, e-books etc.) and print are included. Monographs, monographic series and working papers, periodicals and periodical indexes and abstracts are selected for the collection. There is an increasing preference for Internet access to material especially for statistical data, indexing and abstracting and the full text of journal literature. Videos are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Treatment: No limitation; although scholarly analysis of economic trends and issues is primary, technical and popular works are selectively added. Statistical, practice and methodology, historical, computer aspects, and government and legal implications are emphasized.
