LIBRARY COLLECTION POLICY STATEMENTS
I. PROGRAM INFORMATION
The mission of the School of Travel Industry Management is to: (1) prepare individuals for leadership and professional positions in the travel industry through education and training, (2) generate new knowledge in the travel industry through research and graduate education, and (3) provide a center for information resources and education to assist the visitor industry in Hawaii, the Asia Pacific region and beyond. TIM offers a BS in Travel Industry Management with a choice of four areas of emphasis: hotel management, restaurant management, tourism management or transportation management. The MS/TIM program with either the Plan A (thesis) or Plan B (non-thesis) options also allows students to select from four areas of specialization: tourism and travel, hotel, restaurant and institutional management, transportation, or travel industry education. In addition the school has continuing professional education programs including the TIM Neighbor Island Seminars and custom training programs and presents two summer institutes each year: Executive Development Institute for Tourism (EDIT) and the Hawaii International Hotel Institute (HIHI). TIM is a World Tourism Organization (WTO) Education and Training Center and is home to the Center for Tourism Policy Studies and the Sustainable Tourism and Environment Program (STEP).
II. COORDINATION OF COLLECTING RESPONSIBILITIES
TIM has its own library, the Sunset Reference Center. In cooperation with TIM's Center, Hamilton Library collects selectively in the travel field, generally emphasizing reference material and publications with a broad treatment of the discipline, including transportation as applied to the travel industry.
The school's curriculum has an international multidisciplinary perspective with an emphasis on Hawaii and the Asia Pacific Region. Within the library, consultation with selectors in Special Collections (Hawaiian and Pacific Collections), Government Documents, the Asia Collections, Science and Technology, and the Wong A/V Center, occurs for complete coverage of the travel industry. Primarily, individual library units acquire material according to the subject /area emphasis of each unit, and consultation focuses on overlapping or gap areas. Hawaiian and Pacific selectors cover their geographic areas. The Asia Collection covers selection of material concerning the industry in Asian countries and major works covering U.S. - Asia interactions. Government Documents acquires material through U.S. deposit program, including reports and statistics on industry demographics, regulation, industry-wide activities and trends, etc. Science and Technology includes material on aspects of ecotourism, food processing and service, health resorts and spas, building operation and housekeeping.
III. GUIDELINES TO MATERIALS COLLECTED OR EXCLUDED
Language: English is the major language acquired. Asian collection selects Asian language materials on a limited basis.
Chronological: The primary emphasis is on current developments and data; back files are retained where historical data is used in research or course-work.
Geographic: Material covering the United States, Hawaii, the Pacific and Asia is the focus.
Date of Publication: Current imprints are preferred. Older material is acquired for replacement, or by faculty request.
Types/Formats of Materials Collected: All formats, electronic (online, CD-ROM, e-books etc.) and print are included. Monographs, monographic series and working papers, periodicals and periodical indexes and abstracts are selected for the collection. There is an increasing preference for Internet access to material especially for statistical data, indexing and abstracting and the full text of journal literature. Videos are considered on a case-by-case basis in consultation with the Wong A/V Center and TIM faculty.
Treatment: The primary emphasis is on applications (practice and methods), analytical and critical treatments, empirical research reports, statistical data sources, management, administration and marketing, political and governmental roles and psychological and sociological aspects. Textbooks and popular works are acquired selectively.
IV. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
Also associated with the TIM School are the Leong Hop and Bernice C. Loui Computer Laboratory, Hotel Design Laboratory, four food modules and the new Gee Technology Learning Center.
