LIBRARY COLLECTION POLICY STATEMENTS

I. PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Animals Sciences Department of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources has been merged with the Food Science and Human Nutrition program to form the Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Sciences Department.

The Animal Sciences unit provides training in management and production, food processing and marketing, veterinary sciences, the pharmaceutical and feed industries, teaching extension, and research. These positions require skills in management, nutrition, genetics, physiology, meat science, animal health, feed and forage utilization, engineering, business, marketing and salesmanship. The department offers the BS and MS degrees in animal science and the BS degree in animal technology.

Faculty and graduate student research interests include beef cattle nutrition and genetics; dairy cattle nutrition and physiology; management of cattle in hot climates; livestock reproduction, poultry and swine nutrition and management; small and large animal veterinary care, laboratory techniques, freshwater shrimp breeding and nutrition, and aquaculture pond management.

II. COORDINATION OF COLLECTING RESPONSIBILITIES

Materials are collected that meet the needs of the undergraduate and graduate programs as well as those of the research and teaching faculty. The Animal Sciences department makes use of Agricultural Station reports and other documents collected by the Government Documents collection.

The Hawaiian collection interacts with the State of Hawaii Aquaculture Development Program, Anuenue Fisheries Research Station and other state agencies to gather material relevant to the Animal Sciences program.

Library staff serve on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and assist the committee with bibliographic information needs.

III. GUIDELINES TO MATERIALS COLLECTED OR EXCLUDED

Language: English is preferred.

Chronological: No limitations, but the emphasis is on current theories and research.

Geographic: Literature of interest originates in the United States, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and to a limited extent, Japan. Application of the research derived from this literature is focused in the Pacific basin and tropical regions. The acquisition of materials from other areas is generally limited to regional studies.

Date of Publication: No limitations, but current materials are most important.

Types/Formats of Materials Collected: Monographs on current research; upper level textbooks; government publications; conference proceedings; selected foreign and United States dissertations; handbooks, print and electronic forms of indexes, abstracts, bibliographies, and dictionaries are all collected. Excluded are manuscripts, reprints of articles within serials, house organs, and private and company files.

Treatment: Historical; applications, methods and practice; computer-related; equipment used; biographical; reference and bibliographical; statistical and mathematical; textbooks; professional and applied training; and, reports on scientific experimental results.
