Horticulture

LIBRARY COLLECTION POLICY STATEMENTS

I. PROGRAM INFORMATION

Horticulture teaching and research takes place in the Tropical Plant and Soil Science Department. Horticulture is the science, technology and art of growing and using fruits, nuts, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants and their products. The UH Manoa horticulture program is unique in its offerings in tropical horticulture and has an emphasis on tropical crop production and plant management. Other areas of interest include crop modeling; biotechnology; tropical plant genetics; landscape construction and management; agroforestry; ornamentals, including orchids, anthuriums, and proteas; crop nutrition and fertilizers; and turf crops.

The department offers the BS degree in tropical horticulture with science, production, and business emphasis options. Also offered are MS and PhD degrees in horticulture.

II. COORDINATION OF COLLECTING RESPONSIBILITIES

Horticulture has its own literature, but also draws on the literature botany, chemistry, and biology, and on many of the other disciplines in the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR). Selection is coordinated with the librarians responsible for these areas. Coordination is also required with the selectors for the Hawaiian and Pacific Collections. Government Documents provides many publications for this department. Duplicate copies may be added to the Hamilton Collection, but purchases are not made for this purpose.

Individuals in the department have good personal collections on their field of interest, especially departmental publications.

III. GUIDELINES TO MATERIALS COLLECTED OR EXCLUDED

Language: Material in English is preferred. Spanish and Portuguese publications on tropical areas are collected. Occasionally, French or German material concerning the tropical Pacific is acquired. Asian language materials are collected especially for tropical crops; they are housed in both the Science and Technology area and the Asia Collection.

Chronological: No limitations, but the emphasis is on current theories and research.

Geographic: Worldwide areas in the tropics and semi-tropics, with an emphasis on the Pacific basin and Pacific rim regions. Materials on any horticultural industry in Hawaii, or any potential horticultural crop for Hawaii, are collected. Basic coverage is maintained for temperate crops.

Date of publication: Current materials are emphasized; gaps are filled as needed.

Types/Formats of Material Collected: Monographs on current research in the field; serials, including Web access when available; monographic series; handbooks, dictionaries, and encyclopedias; bibliographies; indexes and abstracts with a preference for Web access; conference proceedings; floras; soil maps; selected United States and foreign dissertations.

Treatment: All treatments are included. Both research and applied aspects are collected. Popular works and textbooks are selectively collected on crops of particular importance in Hawaii.

IV. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

The department is proposing to change the degrees offered to BS, MS and PhD in tropical plant and soil sciences.
