Disaster Preparedness Kit

Through October 2005
Special Collections
Fifth floor, Hamilton Library

It's only a matter of time before the next hurricane strikes. When you are given the order to evacuate ... will you be ready?

What will you take with you?

Special Collections staff have assembled a full size disaster preparedness kit for a typical family of four and their pet cat. (We filled 3 whole tables with stuff).

We were surprised at the effort and time it took to gather all the items. In the event of a real emergency, we might not have been able to survive. So be prepared.

The Special Collections hours are at http://www2.hawaii.edu/~speccoll/specialinfo.html.

Photo of canned goods
Plan on a minimum of 36 meals -- three cans per person per day. Don't forget a manual can opener.
Photo of batteries and lantern
Keep four flashlights or lanterns, one per person. Plan on two sets of batteries for all flashlights, radio and other electronic devices.
