From: UHM Academic Affairs [academic@HAWAII.EDU]
Subject: Reopening of Hamilton Library-3/28/05

Re-opening planned for Hamilton Main building

Library staff plan to re-open all parts of Hamilton Library to the
public beginning Monday, March 28 at 7:30 am. If all goes well with
remaining repairs and moves, students and faculty will be able to
again access the book stacks on floors one through five of the
building. Please watch the Library's Website and signs at the Maile
Way entrance to Hamilton Library for announcements.

Since the flood of October 30, 2004 the Library has focused on
providing as many services as possible in less than optimal
conditions. The Hamilton annex was opened in November. The main part
of the building is powered by two large external generators.

The main goal now is to provide users with the opportunity to go into
the stacks to retrieve their own materials, and to expand the limited
study space we have on the first floor, the site for most circulation
and reference services. Not all services will be fully operational at
first as the staff works to bring back equipment and services.

University Health and Safety officials have cautioned that the public
will only be able to occupy the upper floors for a limited time due to
the implementation of a manual fire watch system after the destruction
of the original system in the flood. Study spaces and computer
terminals will be set up on the first floor to accommodate as much
extended study and computer use as possible.

Renovation and construction of the ground floor of Hamilton is
estimated to take another 18-24 months.

We look forward to welcoming students, faculty and staff back to
Hamilton Library.

On March 29, five months after the Manoa flood swept through the University of Hawai'i campus, inundating the basement of Hamilton Library, among other buildings, Hamilton will be almost completely reopened to the public. [...]
With the reopening of Phase 1 and 2 of the research library, the public will have access to the stacks and most of the collections again. Phase 1 and 2 contain almost two-thirds of the overall collection, including the Hawaiian-Pacific Collection, Asia Collection and Rare Book Collection, as well as a large general collection of research materials. Phase 3, the Hamilton Library addition, reopened on Jan. 10. Though most of the library will be operational, power is still being supplied by generators, just two elevators are working, and not all computer terminals will be available for weeks. "We've come a long way in a very short period of time thanks to the support of the staff, community and volunteers," said librarian Diane Perushek. "But there is work that still needs to be done."

The Map Collections is CLOSED due to severe damage sustained in the October 30, 2004 flood. Public service for Government Documents has resumed through the Sinclair Library reference desk. Maps are currently unavailable for use by patrons. Patrons needing assistance in locating maps may contact the Map Collection by phone, 956-6199, or email, mapcoll@hawaii.edu.
